Barry Poss is former President and Chairman of Sugar Hill Records, a company he founded in 1978. Specializing in various roots music genres, Sugar Hill has received twelve Grammy awards and over fifty Grammy finalist nominations, with an artist roster including Doc Watson, Dolly Parton, Ricky Skaggs, Chris Thile and Nickel Creek, and dozens more in a catalog of several hundred titles. Emmylou Harris regards Sugar Hill as “one of the few seminal independent record labels in America,” while Lyle Lovett describes it as a label with an “artist’s vision.” Poss sold the company to the Welk Music Group in 1998. In 2006 he received the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his accomplishments in music as a record executive.
He has served on a variety of boards, including Doc Arts Inc. (Full Frame Documentary Film Festival), North Carolina Public Radio–WUNC, North Carolina Folklife Institute, International Bluegrass Music Museum, Foxfire Fund, Association for Independent Music, and Blue Ridge Institute. He is an invited guest lecturer in the Markets and Management program at Duke University and the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC–Chapel Hill. He has an Honors B.A. in sociology and psychology from York University in Toronto, Canada, where he received the Masters Award for Academic Achievement, and an M.A. from Duke University, where he was a James B. Duke Fellow in the graduate school.
