Term II: Special Topics in Documentary Studies (Through Oral History)
This course proposes understanding the complex, practical, theoretical, and ethical issues in education using the method of oral history. Students will complete an oral history project supported by archival documentation and by interviews conducted with an educator or a person involved in education. Significant in-class time will be devoted to discussions of interviews and archival research. Assignments will include readings on the method of oral history, educational oral histories, and current educational topics. Graded work will include written responses to readings and a final presentation. Students will work in writing groups throughout the course. This course includes a service-learning component involving work in the community.
