Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Who is eligible?

    1. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, residing in the United States, Puerto Rico, and other U.S. territories, and a BIPOC artist or curator.

    2. Applicants must not be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program. Staff and faculty of the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University are not eligible.

  2. How is the stipend disbursed?

    1. The stipend will be disbursed in two installments, the first of which will be given upon the completion of Part I of the lab modules, and the second upon completion of Part II. The stipend will be reported on a 1099-Miscellaneous tax form. It is the responsibility of the fellows to file their tax liability.

  3. When will virtual sessions be held?

    1. Sessions will be held 2–3 times a month on Mondays, 6–9 p.m.; Saturdays, and/or Sundays, 11 a.m.–2 p.m.; with a kickoff on Friday, Sept 24, 5 p.m. (all times ET).

  4. What do the monthly meetings consist of?

    1. Artist Talks: There will be monthly guest talks/sessions/conversations with visiting artists. Each artist has engaged, in their own ways, with the questions at the heart of the DocX Archive Lab.

    2. Ideation Sessions: Fellows will convene, with Lead Artist Facilitator Nyssa Chow,  to discuss our questions, and trouble our certainties. Fellows will reflect on the artist talk of the week, or on a reading or screening. Sessions will be informed by the specialized perspectives of visiting artists, and grounded by a shared desire to deepen our art practice.

  5. When will applicants be notified?

    1. Applicants will be notified the week of August 30, 2021.

  6. Can artist collectives apply?

    1. Because artists are not applying to the lab with a specific project, artists working with other artists must apply as individuals.

  7. What if I can’t make all of the sessions?

    1. The lab supports a small and intimate cohort, and each fellow’s attendance is integral to the richness of this program. We ask that fellows not miss more than 3 meetings/ guest artist sessions, unless approved by the lab director.

  8. Do I have to pay for travel and lodging for the in-person retreat?

    1. No. DocX will cover travel and lodging costs for the retreat.
