How To Apply

As part of a strategic priority to diversify the documentary field, the DocX initiative at the Center for Documentary Studies invites applications from BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of color) artists and curators who are underrepresented in the documentary field.

Applications are open at from July 14, 2021, 12:00 p.m. ET until August 16, 2021, 11:59 p.m. ET.

You will be asked to answer the following questions and to upload samples of past work.

  1. The DocX Archive Lab is a space for BIPOC artists to come together in community and conversation, to ask how our embodied realities might inform and impact our art practices, to exchange and invest in our most deeply held knowledges, to meet different ways of working and to (re)imagine what that work could do in the world. Why would a space like this be meaningful to you, in particular? [between 350-400 words]

  2. Why now? What questions/tensions are you interested in exploring at this point in your practice? [350 words or less]

  3. How would you most like to be supported in your practice? [250 words or less]

  4. Describe the community that informs your work. What is your relationship to that community? [250 words or less]

  5. What is the last encounter you had out in the world or with a work of art—visual, text, music/audio-based—that captured your imagination, and why?  [250 words or less]

  6. Please upload an artist bio.

  7. Please provide sample(s) of past work with a brief description:

  • Up to 3 time-based samples (film/video, VR or audio) not to exceed 15 minutes total. If you upload a work sample that is longer than 15 mins you *must* indicate which 15 mins you'd like us to review.
  • Up to 6 still images
  • Up to 10 pages of written material
  • Link to interactive materials
