Mary D. Williams, MFA, is a performing folklorist and adjunct professor at the Duke Center for Documentary Studies and Wake Technical Community College. With a combination of spirituals and protest songs, Williams teaches the role of music from slavery through the civil rights movement, illustrating how music provides an effective entry point for uniting us as we examine history.
