Xaris (pronounced HA-ri'z) A. Martínez is the assistant to the director of the Center for Documentary Studies (CDS) at Duke University. A native Californian raised in Guatemala, Martínez has a BA, summa cum laude, in history from the University of California, Los Angeles, an MA in southern studies from the University of Mississippi, and was a PhD student in history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for four years. She has worked at the Southern Documentary Project and Southern Cultures and served as a bi-lingual teaching assistant for courses in history, southern studies, global studies, and women's and gender studies. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, traveling, going to live music events, and taking pictures on her iPhone.
