Closing Screening of “Til Íslands”

Join us for the closing screening of "Til Íslands," artist and Duke alum Emma Geiger's experimental documentary short film, and a last chance to visit her exhibition of the same name.
Schedule

• 8 p.m. - Attend an outdoor screening of "Til Íslands" on the CDS front porch
About the Screening
Returning to the Icelandic landscape left behind by her great-great-grandparents in 1888, "Til Íslands" (meaning "To Iceland" in Icelandic) documents the delicate experience of the filmmaker's reconnection with a land and people in the midst of dramatic environmental change. Shot on 8mm and 16mm film, along with cameraless imagery created by placing plants, seaweed, and wool directly on the film, this experimental documentary short invites viewers into a conversation between past and present, in which the plants, animals, water, and people of the landscape all take part.
About the Exhibition
The exhibition features work created at Geiger's family farm on Lake Apavatn and at the Nes Artist Residency in Skagaströnd, including still and moving images; phytograms of plants, seaweed, and wool; and a quilt naturally dyed with lupine, rhubarb, and lichen.
Works from the exhibition will be available for purchase following the closing of the exhibition.
About the Artist
Emma Geiger is an artist, photographer, and musician from Hopkinton, New Hampshire, working with natural materials and analog processes. She holds an MFA in Experimental and Documentary Art from Duke University, and a graduate certificate in Visual Storytelling from the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. In 2025 she was awarded the Cassilhaus Biannual Travel Fellowship for her documentary project exploring her ancestral connection to Iceland.
Geiger writes and performs music and has released two EPs - Haven (2022) and Reverse Bloom (2024). Across her visual work and music, nostalgia, solitude, and a lifelong relationship with the natural world remain central.
